I was just asked about trends in open source for eLearning and particularly open source eLearning tools. Probably one of the better sources on this is Jane Hart’s Instructional Tools Directory. You can find a long list of tools broken into authoring tools, games/simulations, quiz/test tools, social media, delivery platforms, tracking and whether they support mobile.
I recently came across an interesting online conversational podcast with Clark Quinn (Quinnovation) and Cammy Bean (Kineo) on the topic of "instructional design malpractice." Of course there is no such crime on the books, but perhaps there should be. The upshot of the admittedly tongue-in-cheek conversation was that there is too much boring eLearning out there that is overly long, overly detailed, and just not focused on what counts - namely, changing behaviour.
As designers of electronic learning and information, we often find ourselves confronted by the purpose of the learning. Electronic Learning is about performance and content; in a sense instructional design is not purely creative; it is design with intent. Our storyboards and design documents need to be an extension of this intent. Design documentation may not be about solving problems, but it can help avoid them by providing an elegant way to document design intent.
by AJ George. Two of the coolest new tools in PowerPoint 2010 (especially if you like to make your own graphics) are the Shape Union and Shape Subtract tools. Previously in PowerPoint, if you wanted to join two shapes you would use the Group tool. The issue with grouping shapes was that if you then decided to add certain formatting options to the shape, grouping would add it to each individually element of the shape rather than to the new shape as a whole.

We'll explore innovative strategies to bring traditionally dry topics to life, making them resonate with learners and drive tangible change.
Informal Learning: Are We Missing a HUGE Opportunity? with Bob Mosher of Learning Guide Solutions, presented by Massachusetts Chapter of ISPI and sponsored by Kineo. This real-live event happened October 21 in Westford, MA. These are my notes, taken live during the workshop – mostly my transcription, no editorializing. I have not gone back and cleaned things up, so apologies in advance for any incoherence… _ Bob Mosher, LearningGuide Solutions This workshop would be better as a series of 15 minu
By Shelley A. Gable. If you’re familiar with Gagne’s nine events of instruction , you know that one of the early steps in the instructional design model involves stimulating recall of learners’ prior knowledge. Typically, this step is listed after gaining attention and stating the training’s objectives. Why stimulate prior knowledge toward the beginning of an eLearning lesson?

Today I read about the Twitter misadventure at H&R Block whereby a call centre employee assuming the name “Kid Fury&# urged all his followers to phone in and ask for him. It was his final day of work with that employer, so he thought it a harmless last hurrah. That was until it went viral and H&R Block call centres across the country were jammed with fools asking for Kid Fury.
Last month our ID team got their feet wet with the learning campaigns in the Age of Empires II – Age of Kings. I’d recommended that all IDs play the game for a few hours to understand how different ‘gamey’ elements are from the conventional ‘interaction’ we use in conventional courseware. It was quite amazing to see Furrowed brows, a disinclination for conversation, intolerance for interruptions, and a general reluctance to stop playing at the end of the day; they were engrossed in the game-play
by AJ George. If you have tried to print handouts in PowerPoint 2010 that include the slide notes, you may have noticed a bit of a shortcoming. You can print handouts with multiple slides per page, or you can print handouts that include the notes. However, there is no way to combine these features and print handouts with notes and get more than one slide per page.
The world of work is changing rapidly, exposing critical skill gaps across industries. Business and HR leaders are feeling the pressure to upskill employees—but many don’t know where to begin. The best place to start is with a clear, organization-wide view of existing skills. Tools like assessments and competency management software provide that visibility, helping you identify gaps and opportunities across teams and individuals.
All jokes aside (“I’m no grown up!” or “I’m still trying to figure that out…”), take a step back in time. I’m thinking back to that early teenage-young adulthood time when you were (perhaps) starting to get a sense of yourself and your aptitudes and hopes and dreams and schemes. What did you see yourself doing as an adult? What did you want to be? I’m putting this question out to the vast group of people who make up the eLearning profession – be you an instructional designer, an LMS administrato
Here are the links and resources from my presentation at the “Learning in Different Worlds&# conference in Lahti, Findland and a small recap which will be expanded later. The trip started off without a hitch and soon I was in London and then off to the Helsinki Airport and a bus ride to my final destination, Lahti, Finland. Soon I was out to dinner with our wonderful hosts Georges Segura, Teemu Moilanen, Iikka Kukkonen, Hannu Heinonen, Maria Muinonen and Sannakaisa Raatikainen.
I’m excited to say that all the Internet Time Alliance (Jay, Jane, Harold, Charles, & myself) are all going to be at DevLearn this year. I’m excited because I’m looking forward to having us all together, given that normally Jane & Charles are in the UK, Harold’s hangs out above the east coast of Baja Canada, and Jay and I populate the west coast.
This month’s big question is Examples of Big Impact from Technology and I’ve taken it as an opportunity to go back and look at the elements of different projects that I’ve worked on over the years that have had a big impact. In this post, I’m going to focus on a common model that has been part of several of the highest impact projects. At it’s core, the model is pretty simple: Guide through setting meaningful personal goals Teach how you can hold yourself accountable to those goals Help the user

The final list of top 100 tools for learning for 2010 is now out on Jane Hart’s website. I understand this list is more inclined towards tools that learning professionals use for their own learning as opposed to those used for creating learning programs or training sessions. I see great gains made by some of the tools while I have not even experienced them as yet.
by Kevin Siegel I received an email from a RoboHelp developer who was faced with a daunting task. He needed to post a copy of his generated RoboHelp project to three servers within his corporation. His RoboHelp project was large and consisted of thousands of topics, tens of thousands of images and other assets. The process of copying and pasting the contents of his generated layout (he was generating WebHelp) wasn't a difficult chore, but it was time-consuming.
These are slides from a My Kineo webinar I ran this week with Kirstie Greany. Don't be tone deaf! Creating tone of voice in eLearning. View more presentations from cammybean.
Recently, I was sent a copy of Gary Woodill’s latest book, The Mobile Learning Edge. Here is a short review: Gary Woodill, describes how mobile devices can provide effective learning in a variety of formats including location-based information, just-in-time training and the ability to provide on-demand documentation such as standard operating procedures (SOPs) when and where the employee needs the information.
Based on comprehensive survey data from diverse healthcare providers, the 2025 HIPAA Benchmark Report delivers actionable intelligence for modern compliance programs. Through analysis of staffing models, program operations, and breach management protocols, it provides a clear picture of current best practices.
I had the (dubious) pleasure of picking up an award for a client at an eLearning awards ceremony a number of years back. There’s been some apt criticism of the whole awards industry thing overall, but it did give me a chance to see what was passing as award-winning content. And I was dismayed. One memorable example had traditional HR policy drill-and-kill tarted up into a ‘country fair’ theme.
As a blogger, I have been accused of many things: wrong, outdated, ignorant, and more recently, sexist and unfunny. How outrageous! Unfunny? Seriously though, I have always maintained that I blog for myself. If someone else can draw any value from my musings, that’s a bonus. Even if someone disagrees with me, that’s fine too, so long as they remember their manners.
How much does one hour of Level 2 elearning cost? and what about Level 3? If you have been involved with custom eLearning development you have either asked these questions yourself or have been asked these by a client. The concept of ‘ levels ’ of custom eLearning development is a commonly used standard matrix for comparing vendors; sadly, this is a much abused concept too.
by AJ George. Over the last two weeks I've introduced PowerPoint 2010's Shape Union and Shape Subtract tools. Now I'd like to give a quick example of how you could incorporate this into your eLearning projects made with PowerPoint. Your end result would look something like this: Using what you've previously learned about the Shape Union tool , construct a few puzzle pieces.

If you know Kineo, you know we’ve been talking up Moodle for a number of years. To date we’ve implemented somewhere in the range of 80-90 Moodles for corporate clients. And now we’ve got something totarry cool to announce. I mean totally cool… …the formation of a joint venture company to develop a distribute a version of the Moodle Learning Management System for the corporate sector.
The other day, I discovered an interesting article, Presence Pedagogy: Teaching and Learning in a 3D Virtual Immersive World , which describes an educational approach for conducting a learning event in a virtual immersive environment. Flying around in VirtualU: Sense of space is important in virtual learning environments. As the abstract to the article indicates: Presence Pedagogy is a way of teaching and learning that is grounded in social constructivist theory.
Unhappy in many ways with the current status of education, particularly here in the US, I’ve been thinking a lot about what would make sense. What’s the role of K12, and then what’s the role of a university? Some thoughts recently coalesced that I thought I’d put out and see what reaction I get. The issue, to me, covers several things.
Companies must start shifting their focus from downsizing to worker retention, so says Jon Picoult in a N.Y. Times article. He writes, “A turnover storm is looming, and most businesses are ill prepared for it.” I agree and have blogged about this issue previously. Retention will become a serious problem for any company seeking high performance. As soon as the economy starts to improve substantially, many of the best employees will choose to leave organizations that have gone through cut-backs an

Our customers account for a number of factors before taking the plunge into e-Learning. I was trying to put together some of the key change factors leading organizations to adopt e-learning stand-alone and as a part of the training blend. I arrived at these factors driving the change: 1. Business Strategy. 2. Geographical Expansion Of Business. 3. New Business Opportunities (which may lead to new skill development). 4.
by Kevin Siegel. A simple-to-use but often overlooked Publish Setting is the ability to assign a password to published Captivate projects. Once a password has been assigned, the eLearning lesson will not begin to play until the correct password has been entered by the eLearning student. To assign a password to a project, open a project and choose File > Publish Settings.
