It is slightly tragic that I have spent much of my adult life on committees, from student societies to residents’ associations to industry bodies. As Athletic Union Chairman at the University of Bristol, I remember the extreme joy that was chairing/ sitting on 14 different committees. This experience has led to my new contribution to social science: “The committee member life cycle.” I hope one day this will be seen as the naughty little brother of the Forming, Storming, Normin

Yesterday, at my presentation Introduction to eLearning 2.0 - ASTD OC , I mentioned that Yahoo MyWeb had a few features that del.icio.us was sorely missing. And that had made me previously conclude: Yahoo MyWeb better than del.icio.us, rollyo, et.al. for Personal / Group Learning However, I told everyone that del.icio.us had been acquired by Yahoo and it was likely that slowly these features would get integrated.

The world of work is changing rapidly, exposing critical skill gaps across industries. Business and HR leaders are feeling the pressure to upskill employees—but many don’t know where to begin. The best place to start is with a clear, organization-wide view of existing skills. Tools like assessments and competency management software provide that visibility, helping you identify gaps and opportunities across teams and individuals.
Second Life is becoming ever more popular and parts of real life ranging from currency to concerts are happening there. Hence it was only a matter of time before the e-learning industry took note. Following its use in some universities as reported by the Guardian, research has been funded to see how learning can work in Second Life. Does the opportunity to be free of the normal bounds of their own personalities allow new opportunities for learning and personal growth in corporate environments?
I regularly read Tracy Hamilton's blog. She's been writing about getting a new LMS. I hate to say it, but this is likely not going to go well. It will be fun to keep reading about it, probably much better than having to be Tracy during the process. In her latest post: What's Happening With My New LMS?!?! she tells us: Oh and my little meeting about my job role and what path this LMS will lead me down.
Today, you can check out the second interview I've had with Brent over at Corporate ELearning Strategies and Development. Cammy Beans Learning Visions Musings on eLearning, instructional design and other training stuff. Wednesday, September 19, 2007 My Online Visual Identity When Michele Martin changed her profile picture the other day, I realized I was a bit disoriented. Suddenly, she didnt look like the Michele I "knew." And I saw how one dimensional our images of our online contacts (and digital friends) can be -- typically based on the same profile picture thats used in countless places.
In marketing and change management courses, I have found the tipping point concept (Gladwell) really useful to illustrate how small changes can cause a big effect. Gladwell’s book is unashamedly US focused. but now we have just lived through a great UK example – Northern Rock. On Friday as the NR shares plummeted it was still perfectly rational for me and other savers to leave our savings with them.

BJ Schone has published a nice little eBook and has an associated blog that provides some interactions that can be used in eLearning that will make the learning more fun and engaging. Some of the interactions he talks about are: Scatter steps Order of importance Find the mismatch Story-based questions Scavenger hunt Branching stories I was planning to also point folks to other lists of these kinds of interactions (which I believe are out there), but for some reason I couldn't easily find them.
If you haven't seen the postings on the blog book tour for this week, you need to check them out. Last night I attended for the first time a meeting of the Brighton Salon , a forum for debating ideas, which meets every month or so in a restaurant on Brighton seafront. The discussion centred on social networking: "The explosion of social networking sites in recent years has prompted some serious reflection on the state of modern friendship. While many suggest that friendships, like communities, are collapsing, others claim that we have never been so well and closely connected.

I have recently completed the e-learning census of e-learning usage amongst the top 15 UK law firms. To find out more about the results, see the e-learning census. Back when I was a training manager at a big four accountancy firm, I was wary of becoming too focused on internal clients; I wanted to know what other similar organizations were doing to harness technology to improve their learning offering.
They saved the best 'til last. The papers on the final day really cut the mustard for me. I chaired a session entitled 'pedagogical and psychological issues' (on my own request to the conference organisers) and I wasn't disappointed. An all female crew of 4 presenters took us through a fast-paced spectrum of ideas and research around e-learning. Maja Snyder (University of Maribor, Slovenia) evaluated several e-learning courses from a student perspective.
I'm not sure if other people are seeing this, but based on a bunch of conversations and calls, it appears that there is a wave of new startups being created right now and the trend is accelerating. Because of my background working with leading startups, e.g., eHarmony, MyShape, LoanToolbox, etc., my background in eLearning, and the fact that I'm a CTO-type person, I may get more of these kinds of calls, so I'm curious if other folks are seeing this as well.

Well here goes nothing. This is my first post on my first blog. Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking with Tony Karrer, and through this conversation I learned a couple of things in addition to some great information about LMS's. Outside of LMS's I learned how ignorant I am when it comes to Web 2.o and E-Learning 2.0, and I learned that there is a lot of advantages to poking around the internet as opposed to spending most of your time reading trade magazines.
Cammy Beans Learning Visions Musings on eLearning, instructional design and other training stuff. Friday, September 14, 2007 So What Kind of a Gamer Are You? In yesterdays poll , I asked readers if they think of themselves as gamers. As of this post, 55% of respondents proudly say "yes, I AM a gamer." Maybe not so proudly. There is some hemming and hawing amongst folks.
This year I had the privilege of being a judge for the e-learning awards. I found the whole process fascinating, giving me a whole new take on how the e-learning industry is operating and who is doing what…not that I’m allowed to tell you much more… The good news is that there were loads of entries (the bad news is that I had to read well over 100,000 words in the process).
