Instructivism is dead. Gone are the days of an authoritarian teacher transmitting pre-defined information to passive students. In the 1990s, constructivism heralded a new dawn in instructional design, turbo-charged by the rise of Web 2.0. Students morphed into participants , empowered to seek new knowledge and understanding for themselves, in the context of their own unique, individual experiences.

It’s everywhere – these varied conversations about learning games and the spending of millions of dollars to further the state of art in learning games. I’ve been on a similar tack; however, it’s quite obvious that most training departments don’t have the millions or even hundreds of thousands of dollars that are required for sophisticated learning game development nor do they have the many months it can take to develop a full-fledged game.

We’re looking for a good subject matter expert for a specific course we’re planning to develop. Prior experience developing online courses is not a requirement for this job. From our Director: I am looking for an expert in Response to Intervention to work with an instructional designer to create an online graduate course for in-service teachers.

As a follow on to the discussion of social learning and formal learning in Long Live … great post by BJ Schone - Have LMSs Jumped The Shark? I constantly hear people (across many organizations) complain about their learning management system (LMS). They complain that their LMS has a terrible interface that is nearly unusable. Upgrades are difficult and cumbersome.

The controversy surrounding the formal/informal roles has suddenly created a flurry of excitement around a post on eLearn Mag. However, I’ve addressed it over at the TogetherLearn site, as it seemed somewhat appropriate to respond from the perspective of a champion of social and informal learning. In short, I point to the issues covered in the Broken ID series , and say that formal instruction isn’t the greatest thing to champion in it’s current form.

What are Interaction Models? An interaction model is a template which one can easily change (customize) to create interactivity. With interaction models at hand, you don't have to build interactivity from scratch. For example, a crossword puzzle where you can put new words and clues easily, to create an entirely new crossword, is an interaction model.

Articulate’s suite of products rate high in the rapid authoring segment. We have used them for several projects, and have found them very effective for development and simple to use. They give standards-conformant output, and save development time and cost. The latest version, Articulate ’09, has some interesting new features like Single-slide Preview, FLV Support, Easy Audio Editor, and Articulate Branding Removed.

I'm hoping you can help a reader with thoughts and likely help others of us … A medium size nonprofit and lobbying organization is working on a designing and creating a social / work network for experts, students, volunteers who are willing to help through campaigning, lobby, sharing knowledge, working on solutions (writing documents). They currently don't have any kind of solution.

On retrospect, my best, most well received courses did NOT contain next buttons. These were courses well designed for the self directed, adult learner. And I believe by not including those dastardly, rotten next buttons it ensured that I consciously designed a very engaging course that kept the learner wanting to participate. These stinking next buttons are just holding us back.

Recently, I spoke with a reporter from The Vancouver Sun about the future of the music industry and digital music. I have written before on the topic in my post New Music Distribution Model: Video Games. The music industry is still struggling with creating a new revenue model and how to handle the disaggregation of content. I told the reporter: "I think they (CDs) will go the way of 8-tracks,” he said.

As part of the continual rethink about what I offer and to who (e.g. training department rethinks to managers, directors, VPs; experience design reviews/refines to learning teams), my thoughts on learning experience design took a leap. I’ve argued that the skills in Engaging Learning (my book) are the ones that are critical for Pine & Gilmore’s next step beyond their experience economy , the transformative experience economy.

A little more than a year ago, I published a post Touch Typing - Cursive Writing - Why? that asked why they would spend so much time teaching my kids cursive writing and not teaching them touch typing. The comment that I just received on this post was great and I couldn't let it be buried. I am as perplexed as you why many schools do not see the need for students to learn how to touch-type.
