Podcasts are a popular and contemporary entertainment medium, but they can also serve as a convenient and effective learning tool. In the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Revenue, our weekly leadership podcast meeting is one component of a holistic leadership development ecosystem currently in development.
Sure, you can host a channel: podcast, vlog, blog, but if you’re hosting other folks, you’re seen as well connected but not necessarily as the expert. So, start by speaking at small events, and get feedback to improve. Writing and speaking are the two obvious ways. Study good presentation style. Study good presentation style.
Build networking opportunities at events. Industry events—whether in person or online—are one way to do this. Do a good job, and you might find someone who wants to interview you for their podcast. Your own industry may have similar events where speakers can submit topics, although in most cases this is done by invitation.
That’s why I often write recaps of the amazing events that TLDC hosts. Last Friday’s event focused on graphic design for instructional design, and TLDC knocked it out of the park again. If you registered for the event, you can watch the replays by logging in using the link emailed to you and selecting the schedule.

Network at industry events. Your industry doubtless has many networking events, and these are attended by a variety of individuals, some educators, some learners, and some potential affiliates. Look for bloggers, podcasters, or even other course instructors covering adjacent topics.
Or would your audience learn more from video presentations or podcast-style talks? Then, complement your membership site with additional plugins to help you sell courses , run events, and even optimize your shopping cart. The content you create for your members is also very dependent on your niche.
For example, if you run a podcast, you might use a paid membership site to provide content to paid listeners, ultimately growing your userbase. Drive interest with exclusivity by offering your paid members early access to products, or hosting members-only events either online or in person.
