Learningobjectives clarify exactly what it is youre trying to teach. Ray Sims has written a great summary on Writing LearningObjectives , with citations to some good resources, including Vicki Heaths post LearningObjectives: Writing Learning Outcomes So They Matter. I see the value. How about you?
In my opinion, knowledge of tools is certainly a value add. I agree with Rupa when she says that knowledge of tools is an add-on while designing a training program. They have the knowledge and that is why we should use their focussed knowledge services. But Im not sure I can get people to hold their answers back.
Terminology can feel like buzzwords and jargon to the amateur but many are essential knowledge for the eLearning professional. They should be aligned with the learningobjectives of a course to accurately measure learner progress. It also describes the association of new information with pre-existing knowledge.

Im wondering if we should be talking about tiers of instructional design. What I do have is 13+ years of experience in the field, plus a lot of self-directed energy to learn more. Im a linear reader in recovery and have been actively learning how to skim books and not feel guilty about it. I do feel like theres a certain art to good instructional design--a "feel" that you get that is partially based on knowledge and experience and one thats simply an intuition that exists. Im not sure if the SME was reading a script, reading the notes, or just speaking from the heart. Just like some songwriters benefit from having others interpret their songs (no matter how classic their originals), some SME's benefit tremendously from someone else articulating their powerful knowledge in a way they simply couldn't.
