The Washington Post recently ran an article on Project MMOWGLI (Massively Multiplayer Online Wargame Leveraging the Internet), a new MMORPG being rolled out by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) that will allow thousands of players to participate in solving geopolitical crises created by hypothetical pirate attacks off the coast of Somalia.
So, while SurveyMonkey’s research is interesting, it still doesn’t tell us conclusively what the effect is of over-questioning your clients. When Im not busy helping to change the face of corporate learning, I like to train with the Dashe & Thomson company bike team, travel and read. My vote to solve this problem?

But we need to bring technologists and the learning theorists and researchers together to design the roadmap. We understand that social media, and at a higher level social learning, are crucial to course design moving forward. And contrary to my statement in the third paragraph, hopefully we’re not too far off.

But Im not sure I can get people to hold their answers back. However, it does require the ability to think both logically and creatively, and it requires some knowledge of what research has shown works (as opposed to what our personal tastes tell us should work). Sorry Tony, but Im going to jump into the conversation now.
Im not a big theory person. Im much more into practical application. Im not saying that these theories are right or wrong -- but they get tossed about and referred to with great relish by some in the industry. Im not a big theory person. Im much more into practical application." Please add your own essentials.

Monday, May 21, 2007 Learning Styles as Fortune Telling My research into understanding the role of learning styles in e-Learning continues. Im struck by why I find this topic so interesting. And on that note, I think Im pretty much done now with my learning styles assignment. As a practical person, I tend to avoid theory.
So, the eLearningGuild research again to the rescue. Questions and items can also be imported from MS Word, IMS QTI, Respondus, rich-text, and other formats. They didn't really need tracking of user responses, instead they wanted them to be fun. Here's guild member satisfaction ratings for tools in the test / quiz category.
Monday, November 05, 2007 Instructional Design Inspiration As I mentioned last week , Im in the midst of designing my first custom eLearning course in quite awhile. Ive gotten rusty in the practice of ID, although very adept in the research and learning part (and I can talk a pretty good game). Theres more, Im sure.
Example with researching the Hague Convention countries. IM can be useful for building relationships b/c the expectations for spelling and language aren’t so formal. Instructors can relate content to international current events, even with a set syllabus. Use e-cards to let students know you are learning about their holidays.
Autism project–doctoral research for autism. Just IM her (Lyr Lobo) and ask for I think Holiday Fun 2008. She does one-on-one, especially with doctoral students where she supports their research. When middle school students role play Of Mice and Men , their opinions change over the course of the trial. Military training.
Leave persistent comments (not just IM). Previous research–hard b/c research takes so long. Asynchronous education technology course, ongoing action research to improve. Social networks for distance learning. Evaluating social networks. Features of social networking (from Boyd & Ellison ). Connect with others.
Q 12: His (Prenski) research focused on a specific class of society in the north hemisphere. A:This is correct, Prenski’s research doesnt include a very large and diverse sample. There are definite biases in the findings of the research that are directly related to the lack of diversity in the sample.
Tuesday, April 03, 2007 eLearning Guild Event -- My Sessions As Ive mentioned here before, Im extremely excited about attending the upcoming eLearning Guild event here in Boston. Im excited to go to as many sessions as I can. Im excited to pick peoples brains. And Im wondering if Im missing something really cool.
Tuesday, March 25, 2008 Jott This Blog I havent had so much time lately to blog, as this project Im working on has been quite grueling. I find my best time for thinking up excellent blog entries is late at night when Im lying in bed. That is, of course, if Im even awake after the kids have finally fallen asleep.
So, what do I do if Im not doing that? Im not such an anal person, so this isnt my favorite thing in the world. I learn what books I need to read, what research I need to track down. And Im really excited about the project Im working on. I think a lot about instructional design, but I dont really practice it.
For various reasons, Im not going to go back to school to get a Masters Degree in instructional design. But I firmly believe that this journey Im on is giving me the experience and educational equivalent (if not better) than a formal M.Ed. Even though Ive been doing this ("instructional design") for over ten years, Im starting over.
I was recently part of a research project with a multinational Fortune 500 company (full disclosure — they are a Cultivate customer) to identify digital behaviors that indicate high-performing leaders and teams. Even at a highly technical, engineering-heavy company like Google, this feel of security was key to the best-performing teams.
This depth in technical knowledge not only enhanced his skills but also sparked a deeper interest in research and advanced learning. Recognizing the synergy between these two degrees, Jeremy notes, I learned how to read and understand data in the MCS-DS program, and Im learning how to use that data to make decisions in the MSTM..
Im curious what other folks experiences has been. Im so happy to see you post this up. Im struggling with this right now. Im not on to trying to source another college or university to try out. research methods, history of education, etc.). When my contract is up at the college Im highly unlikely to re-sign.
Thursday, June 28, 2007 Emerging Technologies in e-Learning I sat in on a lunchtime WebEx presentation with Gary Woodill -- Director, Research and Analysis, Brandon Hall Research. Marshall McLuhan) -- Im not trying to be a smarty-pants here, but I looked this up and Gary was close: "We look at the present through a rear-view mirror.
Im losing my steam, but trying to stay somewhat on target. So go ahead and "Email or IM another blogger in your niche to introduce yourself and your blog". I want to share as much as I can about projects Im working on. Im not sure Ill bother with that. Im not sure if it does much for a site with minimal traffic.
I dont know if this has been supported by research. Im not saying to leave the info a mystery; Im saying that Ive seen a lot of elearning that seems to underestimate the intelligence of the learner and makes every little thing painfully explicit. Im not sure what to make of it, honestly. Im way out of practice.

Im always excited to check in with our women working in tech for Womens History Month to hear what theyve accomplished and how theyre inspiring the next generation. Tech can be a fantastic place to work, but some companies still need to work on evolving their culture when it comes to gender, so do your research when interviewing for roles.

Just to be clear, Brandon Hall Research does not own Education Island. Lots of youre hot, want to hook up, and other obnoxious comments.
Im concerned that women will be excluded if such a focus is put on gaming skills -- or at least the gamer label. Im just raising some questions. They are Gen Y, and probably in the 57% of people considered "joiners" in the often-cited Forrester Research chart. I dont have a conclusion here. than Gamer 4.0.

Im still a really hands-on person. Or maybe Im just too lazy and poor. Now, Im not linking to John just because he is full of praise of me (which is nice and somewhat embarrassing, I must admit.), Im with you, Maria! An inquiry class Im taking takes me into the mind of Sherlock Holmes. 4:35 PM Cammy Bean said.
Not because Im trying to figure out the mysteries of love (although that would be nice, too) -- but because it turns out Im extremely fascinated by the brain and how it works. Thursday, May 18, 2006 A General Theory of Love An article in National Geographic about the chemistry of love sparked a conversation with my friend Bob.
Multitasking is a hot topic for researchers and practitioners alike. Researchers focus on the human brain’s ability to multitask, while practitioners focus on the impact of multitasking the workplace. However, research indicates that the brain can be trained to do so efficiently and effectively.
