For organizations interested in promoting employee growth, a mix of formal with informal education methods may be the key to success. Informallearningrefers to the spontaneous, ad-hoc learning most of us engage in every day when we feed our curiosity or explore answers to questions provoked by our environment.
Recently Anne Marie blogged Location and Learning (which I have reproduced here) and she asked me whether or not I consider her central idea an example of an InformalLearning Environment (ILE). In the hospital, then, formal teaching sessions remain a core component of the student’s learning environment.
The good news first: the market is upbeat about LMS technology; in the recent past I have seen an increasing number of enquiries on LMS – which is good. The ‘not so bad’ news, something which made me think a little – in many RFPs I still find eLearning is a very small part of the requirements.
Do they learn more about their job from formal training (classroom, online, etc.) or do they learn more informally (from peers, managers, etc.)? You should find out, and here’s why: Informallearning accounts for over 75% of the learning taking place in organizations today. Reality Check.
Given that the goal of instructional designers and training developers is to improve employee performance, it’s surprising that many continue to create blended learning programs with little or no reliance on performance support tools or systems. So, the important thing: tech stuff ends up being complicated, but what helps are the same innovation (aka informallearning) steps as always. This may well be a problem in my own referring sites (e.g. the Quinnovation News page). And also, if you’re using one of my old URLs, it may be a problem to track down!

The good news is you can record your own 360° videos using special cameras that are reasonably priced IMHO. Thankfully I stumbled upon this discussion thread in the Google Photos Forum about a different problem, for which Russ Buchmann refers to the Photosphere XMP Tagger app (not a Google app). I also find the videos a little blurry.

However, this is hardly news, and your company is likely already preparing to tackle this challenge. Today, corporate learning is becoming increasingly autonomous. Employees often prefer informallearning, and companies do their best to accommodate them by offering rich libraries of third-party content.
The good news is that online instructors can create meaningful and impactful learning experiences for the students while minimizing learner dropout rates. Although online training comes with its challenges, it also offers benefits such as remote access and better engagement when compared to the traditional classroom approach.
Work and learning are converging, and as this change happens, the infrastructure of the old corporate learning must go – things like traditional one-size-fit-all in-person training seminars. Activity streams should be available for the company at large and for workspaces.
