This should be taken into account as we integrate informal learning programs into our organizations. I recently participated in the #PLENK2010 MOOC, a Massive Open Online Course to study PLE’s PLN’s and PLM. Structure added to a panel discussion can add great value, while still allowing for informal learning to happen.
I believe it’s useful to help people see the components, but it doesn’t capture the goal of an integrated system. The original had very discrete components, and an almost linear path, and that doesn’t quite convey the reality of how things are tied together. I’ve been wrestling with my diagramming application (OmniGraffle) to rethink it.
I’m not buying the PLE, but as noted above, “Adaptive Learning” is going more along those lines, which again, to me, it is not the same. . The system can interface/integrate into an existing LMS if you so choose, but it can also stand alone (which is my preference for the offering). .

Even when L&D professionals consciously integrate interactivity into their online courseware, I usually don’t think it’s all that engaging anyway.
