LMS vendors are continuing to add some very unique features in an effort to set themselves apart from the competition. Desktop sharing (appears with a few vendors). Integration with Skype – finally! Section 508 (still shocking at the lack of vendors that fail to offer this feature). Guess what some vendors do.
LMS/LCMS vendors are notorious for offering the amazing “module&# in their marketing and advertising pitches – whether it is on their web site, at trade shows, white papers, e-mail marketing, whatever. Now, we are talking about your base LMS, not their super duper LMS (if they offer such – and not all vendors do).
As I was walking around the Expo floor yesterday, I was surprised by a LMS vendor that had some “What were they Thinking?&# If you are attending TechKnowledge, you will surely figure out the vendor if you are walking around and talking to vendors. Especially, since they — the vendor is making this interface change.
Vendors were divided into groups by colors. I saw another vendor with a headset who pitched it as a rugged tablet headset. Shockproof and Waterproof (IP66) (according to the vendor). Comes with Document Navigator, Video Recorder, Camera app with barcode reader, media player. No mobile app. 16GB internal storage.
And, hey, many e-Learning vendors are vested in the "old boomer" model of training. with games like Space Invaders, the thought of the player is geared more toward pattern recognition, “what pattern are the invaders following&# and “how do I disrupt the patter?&# "We dont have the budget for that." Vendors were saying, lets “wait on those&# or “our customers are not requesting them, so we are holding off&#. Apparently, the potential customers and even clients are speaking and those vendors are listening. Not just a few vendors, the industry as a whole. That smartphones were the answer to mobile learning.
LMS Vendors and Tablets Update. That said, why is this happening: A significant (over 90%) of vendors are holding off this year and at least part of next year from optimizing their solution to the iPad. Two years ago, lots of LMS vendors were saying their systems were browser agnostic. Gartner projects 54.8 million units.
I like this system and its functionality in comparison to the other players in this space. Please remember for TM or as some vendors like to pitch as “performance management or knowledge management&# , the modules are extra and are not part of the system (at least for now). Use Skype within their system. Big Dog LMS.
That was the best advice because it allowed me to learn what matters to the industry from colleagues, practitioners, thought leaders and vendors. . There is a grit and resilience you gain from sports and the importance of being a team player; it all adds great value in the workplace. . Thanks, Donna Beccaria!)
