Originally a counterpoint to the institutional Managed Learning Environment (iMLE or 'VLE'), PLEs are becoming a much talked about concept, and were the prime focus of the recently held PLE Conference in Cornella, Barcelona. Now it's time to change direction a little and challenge the unhelpful binary of PLE versus VLE.

Clearly this is a different use of PLE's than those outside the firewall, for free rangers, and for learning from everything of personal interest. And they are not, therefore, PLEs.

Learning has become more “personal” and as a learning solutions provider , one has to be aware of this critical requirement. The term personal learning environment (PLE) describes the tools, communities, and services that constitute the individual educational platforms learners use to direct their own learning and pursue educational goals.
What this has come to make me realize is that for the vast majority of knowledge workers (including myself), there should be no separation between my Personal Learning Environment (PLE), my Personal Knowledge Management system, and my day-to-day set of tools that enhance my knowledge worker productivity.
So the PLE conversation has been, for me, framed in terms of the LMS and tools. How do you make an LMS into a PLE? And it started dawning on me that the PLE was about a revolution in learning -- about teaching people to learn -- about empowering individuals to take control of their own learning environments, their futures.

But as I have tried to articulate in earlier blogposts , my PLE is more than people and tools. Other books, such as David Crystal's Txting and Mediated by Thomas De Zengotita, provide incredibly useful contexts about how mobile devices and media shape the world around us and create the digital terrain within which we work and learn.

That information is provided based on their requests. Micro-learning is effective when the nature of the learning required has some or all of the characteristics: When the learning required are bytes of facts, episodes, etc., In addition, all the learning processes are recorded continuously everyday.
Scott Bradley Wilson helped by providing a post with more detailed visualization of this. I think that folks who are in the Personal Learning Environment (PLE) space have a much better idea of what will come next. That's what makes me think that something more along the lines of a PLE will begin to come together to replace it.
Two papers reporting on research into the implementation of personal learning environments using social media provide a little controversy for the special issue. The second PLE paper by Cascero et al, proposes an even deeper form of compromise, suggesting a middle ground between institutional provision and personalised tools and spaces.
• Provide plenty of questions for practice. Provide an epitome of the domain initially, then elaborate. • Provide rich feedback. • Provide your learners with a forum to ask questions and to learn from one another. • Encourage the learner to integrate the VLE into a broader PLE.
Call them Personal Learning Environments (PLE) if you want but the key issue here is that they are based on user-centric design. If we are providing an LMS and thinking we are providing a good learning support mechanism, I think we are deluding ourselves. Blogs and wikis are already being implemented by learners themselves.

As work continually moves towards concept work demand for publishing will decrease and enabling tools, providing support and providing skills training will increase. It's a PLE, but emphasis is on concept work. We need to pay attention to that and recognize that we are publishers as well. Or at least we are right now.
Content creation is an important feature in many personal learning environment (PLE) models, and together with organising and sharing, makes up the cardinal triumvirate of skills that provides learners with a clear advantage.
What schools should be doing is assessing for learning - providing students with personalised feedback on their performance referenced against their own previous personal attainment - what we refer to as ipsative assessment. One challenge for education providers is to decide whether they will support the desire of students to self regulate their learning activities using personal technologies. A number of collaborative and social networking tools regularly play a role within the average student PLE.

A PLE can be messy. Boy have I seen some good content messed up in this way by the content provider! Forget about it. e-Learning should be all neat and tied up in a nice wrapper with a Next button that moves you through a content checklist and a great assessment at the end. Its personal, after all. And people are messy.
