Originally a counterpoint to the institutional Managed Learning Environment (iMLE or 'VLE'), PLEs are becoming a much talked about concept, and were the prime focus of the recently held PLE Conference in Cornella, Barcelona. The first conference on PLEs took place in the humid but tranquil Cornella area of Barcelona this week. Those attending the PLE Conference found themselves quickly immersed in discussion, dialogue and debate over the nature and ethos of the personal learning environment. I was immediately interested because, like me, Mott is striving to bridge the gap between the organisation’s LMS and the learner’s PLE. There has been a lot of talk recently about PLEs (Personal Learning Environments) and everyone it seems, wants to know what they are, what they contain, or if they will replace current institutional VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) or LMS (Learning Management System) provision. No one seems to be able to agree on what a PLE is.
Content creation is an important feature in many personal learning environment (PLE) models, and together with organising and sharing, makes up the cardinal triumvirate of skills that provides learners with a clear advantage. Without organisation and tagging (the use of key descriptive words) such content is not searchable.

User tagging is an important aspect of sharing content that many social media tools promote. Structure allows us to make sense of information by defining a limited and logical set of tags to describe a set of content. I recently participated in the #PLENK2010 MOOC, a Massive Open Online Course to study PLE’s PLN’s and PLM.
The content must be created in small chunks to be combined with other materials as needed, and be richly tagged with metadata that correlates it to educational objectives so that it can be easily accessed by its intended learning audience.
Personalized Learning Experience (PLE). You may know more of it as personalization or localization, but if you take a real deep dive you will see more vendors going PLE.
